Report by: Amanda, Age 15 We all got to wear an old Who tour shirt, so I wore the sweatshirt since I am the oldest. It is from the Kids Are Alright tour in 1989. Mom got it when she saw them in Buffalo. We took a short time when we arrived in Toronto to decide which was the best lot to park in. We passed quite a few people on the way to the show, and there were people hanging around Union Station asking if anyone had any tickets to sell. We were wondering if Victor knew these guys were here, so he could sell his extra one. Anyway, we went though the usual inspections to get ourselves to the front row. Our seats were 17-22, which put us directly in front of Roger Daltrey. It is like being personally serenaded! When they did Fragments, he ended with saying and you and you and you and you etc. (which he also does at the end too) but the final and you, he pointed right at mom when he said it, and she really cheered when did that. (It was probably because she was holding up her Who license plate at him.) I was kind of glad about my seat, because I thought I would get the seat in front of Pino Palidino. He's really good, but I really like looking at Roger Daltrey. Roger said he had a bit of a cold today, so he wouldn't be able to hit all the high notes, but whatever he had, we would get. He was wearing a black t-shirt and black trousers with a belt. Pete was wearing a button up shirt with a pattern on it. Roger wasn't wearing the blue glasses he wore in London, Ontario either. He also wasn't wearing the blue shirt with the logo. Pete wasn't wearing the striped cap he wore in London, but he did start the night out in dark sunglasses. Some of the great songs they did were, My Generation, The Seeker, Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, Fragments, and Who Are You? They also did Behind Blue Eyes (my favourite), songs from Wire and Glass, Baba O 'Riley, and Eminence Front, another of my other favourites. Of course, they also did We Don't Get Fooled Again. When Baba O' Riley ended he threw my brother his harmonica, and was motioning to my mom to wash it because of his cold. On they way home we joked how cool it would be to just catch his cold off it so we could tell everyone we got our cold from Roger Daltrey. But of course we are still healthy. On a sad note, we heard that the usual keyboardist John "The Rabbit" Bundrick wasn't there because his wife was ill. Pete also introduced his brother Simon Townshend that was lucky enough for them to both inherit the same genes, as he joked and tugged his pants, saying not these Jeans. The encore was Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, See ME Feel Me / Listening To You, and ended with T and Theatre, which is a new song where Roger usually drinks Tea while he sings it. During the encore I was holding up a little Union Jack that said American Tour 1982, and singing along being infatuated with Roger, so a stage person came by and handed me one of Roger's guitar pics. I would've rather they ended the show on an older song like Magic Bus, 5:15 or something, but I know there is just too many to choose from. It was apparent that some of the adults at the concert were green with envy of us in the front row. I am not sure they understood that WE understood what The Who was all about. We saw lots of people pointing at us, & commenting things like, you guys are sure lucky, etc. Many of people who where standing around us, spent more time watching US rock to The Who, then actually watching the stage. What we really wanted was Pete's autograph, but we were sure that wasn't going to happen, but that would've topped off a perfect evening. Pete did throw some guitar picks in front of him to the crowd, but we weren't close enough. Roger broke through 2 tambourines from playing so hard. My brother tried to get one, but instead he was presented with a set list which is posted here. |
Steeltown Kids Cheer The Who
Report by: Veronica, Age 8 When we left from Hamilton to go to Toronto, it was slightly snowing. Well, we got to Toronto in pretty good time, considering the traffic jam near Burlington. The first thing I saw was the Bank of America, NOT the C.N. Tower. We pulled into a parking lot near the Air Canada Centre, and saw that the price for events was $25 from a normal price of $10. So we drove around a few corners, and found a spot for $10. It was near the Second City. The first thing we wanted to see when we were in Toronto was Union Station, because when we were in New York City, we didn't get enough time to see Central Station. Well, the Union Station led us straight to The Air Canada Centre, and we found our way to the FRONT ROW!!! We sat through The Pretenders show, because I did not know much of their music. There was a lit up sign behind them that said The Pirate Radio. When they ended, The Who came on after a short break. "The crowd went wild as The Who hit the stage." I don't know about everyone else, but I sure went wild!! They started the show with I Can't Explain. Some sings I recognized that others did not were, Sound Round, Pick Up the Peace, Endless Wire, We Got A Hit, and Mirror Door. Songs I like were also played like, Baba O' Riley, Man in A Purple Dress, and Eminence Front. When they played Who Are You, we pulled out our big Union Jack flag that mom got from Mark Stark and held it high and proud. Other songs I sang along to were We Don't get Fooled Again , and You Better, You Bet. They saved My Generation towards the end. The encore songs were Pinball Wizard, and See Me, Feel me, Listening to You, which I already knew from seeing the Tommy movie a ton of times, as well as even seeing the show on Broadway!! The last song at the show was T and Theatre which we are already used to. WOW, did I LOVE IT!!! I cheered and cheered. After the show we waved at section 106 where Victor bought a ticket, and left with Roger Daltrey's harmonica, and guitar pick. We had to stop for gas on the way home, boy do I wish THE WHO would just play a concert in Hamilton. You know, we have a half a million people here in Hamilton!!
Report by: Paris, Age 10 We went through Union Station, and the Metro Convention Centre to reach the ACC because the wind chill was minus 10. We walked proudly to our front row centre seats, as I overheard many people commenting how lucky we were to be sitting there, and some people joked with us about trading seats! We watched The Pretenders show first, and I caught a guitar pic from the band. For more details on The Pretenders show, click here. The crowd went crazy as The Who hit the stage. They started with one of their first hits, I Can't Explain. They launched into their new mini-opera which many fans had not heard yet. At the end of the show, we were congratulated again about our great seats. We were also noticed as the kids who got the harmonica. The drummer was Zak Starkey, who is the son of Ringo Starr, the drummer of The Beatles. Ringo and Keith Moon were good friends. I really liked the stuff from Tommy, and I wore a Tommy on Broadway hat because I really like the movie, and will watch it whenever it is on. We kind of wondered where we actually parked our van, but be found it because we parked under a tall building with a lit up sign on top that said SOHO, like, "I woke up in a Soho Doorway". I know it wasn't the whole original WHO, but it sure sounded like it!
