Hamilton Tiger Cats vs.
B.C. Lions After a winning submission, Steeltown Kid, Amanda was selected in a contest to be a writer for the Hamilton Spectaor. Here are some details of the event. My day started in the parking lot, where we met up with Jackson, who took us on a tour and we gave our tickets to the takers to be ripped. I gave mine to a little boy and he ripped so carefully it was like something would happen if he ripped it wrong. Then we lost Jackson and went back to the elevator. The elevator is not exciting. It's smaller than most elevators and the lights are pretty dim. The Tiger Cats logo is painted on the doors. Iit is quite stuffy and can be uncomfortable when full.
We went back to the press box and watched the players warm up. When O'Mahony, (B.C. 's kicker) kicked the ball, a kid would fetch it for him. Another guy would clean the ball. Jackson asked if we wanted to see the control room, which is full of TV monitors and about as much buttons and switches as an airplane. Seeing this made me appreciate how much work went into operating the TigerVision. In the press room with me was Ken Peters of the Spec, some reporters from the Vancouver Sun, National Post, two guys from CHML, Bernie Rouoff, and many people with laptops. Kind of like the House of Commons, but with only two rows of people. It is a wonderful thing to experience, seeing the field as if you were a bird. As the warplane flew by, we stood up when the Toronto Mass Choir sang O Canada and the flag was being unrolled. I wonder if they get tired of rolling and unrolling it, because they would have to practice it, wouldn't they? The Tiger Cats were introduced with great enthusiasm from the announcer and the game started with the coin toss, which B.C. won. They chose to receive, and I'm pretty sure that our kicker, Jamie Boreham, kicked as hard and far as he could.
And then the game began. B.C. won the coin toss and chose to receive. They caught the kick and ran 25 yards before being stopped. Soon after that Dondre Gilliam of the Tiger Cats got injured. They brought the cheerleaders on while they checked on him. The Ti-Cats opened the scoring with a 46-yard field goal. Unfortunately, The Lions decided they wanted a touchdown, so they got one and their extra point was also good. Then the Tiger Cats got a touchdown but it was taken back for an off-side. When asked about this, head coach Greg Marshall said, "We can't afford to take any points off the board. " Danny McManus lost 10 yards on the next play, probably form shock and dismay. Troy Davis decided to try to make up for it by running 53 yards before Carl Kidd caught up with him. McManus threw another touchdown but it was taken away again for another penalty on Flick. Boreham gave us a field goal in the top of the second quarter. Right around then a Ti-Cat Rep gave me a yearbook with Greg Marshall's autograph. (He also reminded my mom that you can't cheer in the press box). I think the point of the press box is to keep the media happy. It worked. Every once in a while someone would come around with something. In the beginning of the third quarter they gave us play-by-play sheets that told us what had happened in the second quarter.
Back in the game, Dickenson was sacked and the Lions managed to get in a 17-yard field goal. 3 minutes later Boreham fought back by giving us a field goal. The Tiger Cats decided that wasn't enough and got a touchdown. And this was the FIRST touchdown of the game for the Ticats, so B.C. could taste despair. Boreham then kicked the convert. B.C. didn't like this and tried to get a field goal, but the first time they got a penalty due to formation and lost 5 yards, but they tried again and were successful. Halftime arrived and the press box had roast beef sandwiches thanks to Faloney's. In the near-end of the fourth quarter, there were cookies. You have to keep impartial so the reporters from places other than Hamilton don't get offended.
Dickenson threw the ball to Jackson for a touchdown. O'Mahony scored the extra point and soon after B.C. got a 10-yard penalty for illegal contact on a receiver and McManus threw the only pass Mike Morreale would be on the other end of in the entire game. Boreham kicked a field goal and B.C. 's lead decreased slightly. The score then was 23-22.
Another event happened on the field as a guy had to pic a plane on the Tigervision to win the WestJet race. His choice won. Good thing, or he'd have a week's worth of canned Spam to get rid of. O'Mahony squeezed in a field goal at the last minute, clinching their win. The game ended 26-22. Whoever organizes what happens in the press box, my thanks to you. It made the experience all the more enjoyable. The day did have to end, and although I was happy, and the Lions are happy, I don't know how happy the Tiger Cats are. If they don't read the Spectator, tell them this for me-good luck against the Eskimos and bring home a win! |
The Burlington Teen Tour Band gave us some entertainment, and the Junior Cheerleaders showed us their stuff. The third quarter started in high spirits, even after O'Mahony kicked a field goal. Then things began to go downhill.
